Allegheny Mountain Radio’s Heather Niday visited the 50th birthday celebrations at Cass, collecting memories from Cass residents and those who love this gem of West Virginia.
On June 15th, a train pulled by the Shay #4 engine departed the Cass depot bound for the former work camp at Whittaker Station. On board were those riding the train for the first time as well as those who first rode this very train 50 years ago.

This audio piece features Cass train commentator Monica Fleming, current Cass State Park Superintendent Scott Fortney, Arden Curry, whose family owned the land on which the park is now located, Ben Dickens, the first superintendent for the park and Norris Long, whose father was one of those instrumental in getting approval for the new state park.
