Greenbrier River Trail
The Greenbrier River Trail (GRT) runs 78 miles along former tracks of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. From North Calwell (3 miles east of U.S. Route 219 in Lewisburg) the trail follows the scenic Greenbrier River through Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties to Cass.
The GRT is maintained as a part of the West Virginia State Parks system. The trail is composed of crushed and packed gravel, making it ideal for bicycling, running, backpacking, cross-country skiing, and horse-back riding. The one-percent grade of the trail makes bicycling easy for all ages and experience levels. Swimming and fishing opportunities in the Greenbrier River are endless along the trail and 11 designated camp sites have been established for tent camping.
The Great Greenbrier River Race is held on the last Saturday of April every year in Pocahontas County. It includes a 5 km run and 10 mile bike on the trail, with a 4 miles paddle on the river. The race begins and ends in Marlinton and is always fun for the whole family.
Brilliant views of the Allegheny Mountains and the Greenbrier River are abundant along the entire trail. Most of the trail is surrounded by undeveloped farmland, national forest, and state parks, but access to food, lodging, and shelter is usually conveniently within a few miles of the trail. For more milepost information and details, check out the WV State Parks GRT map here.

The Greenbrier River Trail Association is a non-profit group organized in 1982 to promote the trail and to protect its status as a non-motorized public trail. To visit their website for more information about the trail and the Great Greenbrier River Race go to greenbrierrivertrail.com/.
