Allegheny Mountain Radio’s Heather Niday visited the 50th birthday celebrations at Cass, collecting memories from Cass residents and those who love this gem of West Virginia.

On June 15th, a train pulled by the Shay #4 engine departed the Cass depot bound for the former work camp at Whittaker Station.  On board were those riding the train for the first time as well as those who first rode this very train 50 years ago.

The mournful whistle of a steam engine, heard as a train pulled by the Shay #4 engine departed the Cass depot on June 15th, bound for the former logging work camp at Whittaker Station.  On board were those riding the train for the first time as well as those who first rode this very train 50 years ago.  This is an audio postcard of the 50th anniversary run.

This audio piece features Cass train commentator Monica Fleming, current Cass State Park Superintendent Scott Fortney, Arden Curry, whose family owned the land on which the  park is now located, Ben Dickens, the first superintendent for the park and Norris Long, whose father was one of those instrumental in getting approval for the new state park.

To visit Cass, drive US 219 to Pocahontas County. Near Slatyfork at the bast of Snowshoe Mountain, take Rt. 66 for about 10 miles. For information, call 1-800-CALL WVA or visit the Cass website.
