Wild Ramp Dinner-This Weekend Along US Rt. 219

A small pungent bulb, similar to garlic or wild onions, known as ramps, is growing in shady hillsides along the Allegheny Mountains. Some people say the smell of ramps is repulsive, but others argue that this wild, edible food brings communities together.
If you haven’t yet had your fill, this Saturday a ramp dinner is being served at the Pretty Penny Cafe in Hillsboro, from 2-5, with local music from the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys. Blair will be serving ramp burgers, ramps n’ taters, cornbread, and more springtime delicacies. Although some detest the smell of ramps, others claim that ramps are the quintessential sign that spring has sprung in WV. Last spring, Emily Newton and the Traveling 219 Project visited the community of Frankford, WV to talk about the local ramp feeds that people there remember.
Stop by the Pretty Penny this Saturday for a Wild Ramp Supper. Ramps are also being celebrated this Saturday at the Elkins Welcome Depot with their Ramps and Rails Festival, and in Helvetia a ramp supper will be followed by a square dance.
